MIKOMOTOSHIZUOKA

It is often referred by divers to be the most exciting Ocean in Japan

It is often referred by divers to be the most exciting Ocean in Japan, as you may see hundreds and hundreds of Hammerhead sharks in one dive. As many as 500, if you’re lucky.
Mikomoto Island is an uninhabited Island located on the Southern tip of Izu Peninsula (Shizuoka Prefecture), 11km off the coast of Shimoda city. It is now famous among the global diving community for the large school of Hammerhead sharks seen between spring and autumn. Due to the Islands location, the strong warm current from the South (Black current) makes this area rich with marine life.
The diving style is basically drift diving. When the warm current (Black currents) hit this Island directly, the visibility shoots up and the water temperature rises but at the same time, the current gets stronger.
This current also adds to the areas reputation as “the most dynamic and exciting diving area in Japan”.

OGASAWARA ISLANDSTOKYO

It is a world heritage solitary Islands and ocean far off the coast of Tokyo

It is a world heritage solitary Islands and ocean far off the coast of Tokyo. The ocean here is called the Bonin ocean and the divers call the color of these waters, “Bonin Blue” from the deep clear blue waters surrounding this area.
Ogasawara Islands are a remote chain of Islands located 1,000km South-southeast, off the coast of Tokyo. Due to its remote location and the fact that it was never connected to the main Island, Ogasawara Island hosts a variety of endemic local creatures and culture different from the main Island.
The only way to reach this beautiful Ogasawara Islands is to catch the ferry “Ogasawara Maru” from the Takebashi pier in Tokyo, which takes about 24hours. The fact that it takes such a long time to reach, makes this place an extra special feeling.

Diving Area;

The Island chain can be separated into four areas, the Muko jima Islands, Chichijima Islands, Hahajima Islands, and the Iojima Islands.
Diving areas are mostly located around Chichijima Island, Hahajima Island and Keta Island areas.
The Chichijima Island diving points are all within 30-40min boat ride from the Island. Its site ranges from the dynamic drop offs with large school of fishes to the beautiful and gentle ocean o popular amongst the Japanese divers.
The Hahajima Island diving area has only been open since 1999. Which leaves many areas still unexplored, giving this area an extra essence adventure.

TATEYAMACHIBA

“Shark scramble” and “Japanese hound shark (Traffic) jam”am

An 2 hour drive from the center of Tokyo, Tateyama is a well-known diving area which are often referred to as “Shark scramble” and “Japanese hound shark (Traffic) jam”
It is the only shark feeding area in Japan.
It is important to point out that the feeding is not done to attract divers but done to save the sharks from the local fixed fishing nets set in the area. From the past, there was a large population of the Japanese hound sharks in the area, often caught in the fishing nets. To avoid this unfortunate circumstance, the local fishing community and the dive shop made a plan to lure the sharks away from the fishing nets. This was a success and now, the sharks are no longer caught and hurt in the nets and the local divers are blessed with the opportunity to swim with the sharks. (Japanese hound shark is a nurse shark and does not attach divers)
To dive with these beautiful sharks, you only need to visit Ito, Tateyama which is located on the south tip of the Boso Peninsula (Chiba prefecture). You can see them all year round but during January to March, you may also see the Japanese cormorant diving as deep as 20m. Bird watching during your shark dive, a treat for any divers for sure.
